Alumni News: ShanX Medtech & ARTIC Win Gerard & Anton Award 2025
Two LifeSciences@Work alumni have been named among the 10 most promising startups in Brainport Eindhoven by winning the prestigious Gerard & Anton Award 2025. Congratulations to ShanX Medtech (Venture Challenge Summer 2020) and ARTIC (Proefdiervrij Venture Challenge 2023) on this remarkable milestone!
Each year, the Gerard & Anton Awards — organized by High Tech Campus Eindhoven — shine a spotlight on early-stage startups with the potential to make a lasting impact on people, society, and the planet. This year’s winners reflect the growing strength of health innovation and animal-free research emerging from the Dutch startup ecosystem.
ShanX Medtech: Faster, Smarter Diagnostics
ShanX Medtech is developing a novel rapid test for antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST), aiming to drastically reduce the time it takes to prescribe the right antibiotic treatment. Traditional AST methods often require two days or more; ShanX's technology delivers actionable results within hours, helping improve patient outcomes and combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
This recognition is a key step forward for the team as they continue building smarter, scalable diagnostics for global health. “This milestone is a testament to the importance of improving public health through faster, smarter diagnostics,” they shared.
ARTIC: Next-Gen Animal-Free Testing
ARTIC is a spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology, focused on developing microphysiological systems (organ-on-chip technologies) that replace animal testing in drug development and toxicology. Their platform aims to reduce dependence on animal models while delivering more accurate, human-relevant results.
Their work directly supports the broader shift toward Proefdiervrij innovation in biomedical research — and this award underscores both the scientific value and commercial potential of their mission. “Very proud to be recognized as one of Brainport’s most promising startups of 2025,” the ARTIC team posted, celebrating alongside their research partners and fellow awardees.
