Alumni Update: Scope Biosciences Raises €6M to Scale Up CRISPR Diagnostics Platform
Venture Challenge 2020 alumnus Scope Biosciences has announced a new follow-on investment from SHIFT Invest and Oost NL, marking the next growth phase for its CRISPR-based diagnostics platform, scopeDx®. This round follows earlier investments and a €2.5 million EIC Transition Grant, bringing the company’s total funding to €6 million in combined public and private capital.
Founded as a spin-off from Wageningen University & Research, Scope Biosciences develops molecular diagnostics that combine high precision with field readiness — enabling detection directly at the point of need, without the requirement for central labs or complex instrumentation.
From Lab to Field: scopeDx®
The company's core innovation, scopeDx®, is a CRISPR-based detection platform capable of single-nucleotide resolution. It is designed to operate outside the lab — for instance:
-
In agriculture, where early pathogen detection can prevent yield loss and reduce pesticide use
-
In healthcare, especially in low-resource or decentralised settings where access to diagnostics is limited
"We're scaling up, building out our platform, and preparing to meet real-world diagnostic challenges head-on, "said Niek Savelkoul, CEO and founder of Scope biosciences"
Strengthening Regional Innovation with Global Reach
ScopeBio is based at Wageningen Campus and actively contributes to the East Netherlands innovation ecosystem. The company exemplifies the translation of deep tech into scalable impact.
"ScopeBio's technology aligns perfectly with our ambition to foster regional innovation with global relevance," said Maureen Haverkamp, Invest Manager at Oost NL.
“We are proud to provide our continued support to ScopeBio. Over the past couple of years, we have closely followed ScopeBio’s progress in commercializing their highly accurate, on-site diagnostic platform in agriculture. We are excited to see the team tackling the healthcare market with the same level of determination,” said Sophie van Weede, Associate at SHIFT Invest.
With this funding, Scope Biosciences will continue to scale its operations and further develop scopeDx® for broader application across sectors.
